Sonia Mitra Wins Silver Medal at World Bodybuilding Championship

India has truly entered a golden age wherein men and women are not only walking neck to neck but are also giving their best in leaving each other behind. Indian women have broken free from the preconceived notions and are successfully making a mark for themselves. Be it politics, acting, modeling, aviation, engineering, medicine, or research; women have caste a strong shadow everywhere. It makes us truly proud to be able to talk about another Indian gem that has glorified our nation at a global level.  We are talking about our latest woman achiever, Sonia Mitra who has made India proud by bagging Silver at the World Championships held recently in Thailand.

The 8th edition of World Bodybuilding Physique Sports Championship (WBPF) was held in Thailand from 29 November 2016 to 05 December 2016. The competition saw participants from 50 countries including nations like Mexico, Canada, USA and UK. Conquering every odd and making way through tough competition, India succeeded in getting a foothold over not just one but two winning positions. Sonia Mitra bagged Silver while Sheyasi Das bagged the Bronze. With this dual victory, Indian women once again proved that they are in this game to stay.

Sonia Mitra’s family background and journey so far

Sonia Mitra comes from a middle class Bengali family from Kolkata. It might surprise you to know that Sonia’s passion for bodybuilding was financed by her mother who ran a simple boutique. This was their only source of income. You can therefore imagine that Sonia’s path to success was not a smooth one.

Prior to entering the world of bodybuilding and fitness physique, Sonia had made a name for her in Yoga. You might not know this, but Sonia started practicing yoga at a tender age of 3 years. She not only practices Yoga but she is also a 4-times National Yoga Champion. In addition to this, she also has a stronghold over gymnastics. Sonia has stated in an interview that fitness physique asses participants on strength, agility and physical postures.  She said that her Yoga and Gymnastic background have helped her in polishing these traits immensely.

 

Sonia made a debut into the world of fitness physique in the year 2012 at a tender age of 16 years. She participated at the National Women’s Fitness Physique Championship and to everyone’s surprise, emerged as the winner. Post this, in 2013; she got a chance to represent India at an international event held in Vietnam. Due to the potential she had and the talent she displayed, she was made the Official Female Athlete at Miss India in 2012 and 2013.

The year 2016, finally yielded the fruits of her tireless efforts. Earlier in 2016, she participated at the Asian Championships held in Bhutan and succeeded in reaching the top 5 at this event. What came next was the historic victory at the WBPF World Championships 2016.

2012- Miss India- IBBF- 1st place title holder
2013- Miss India- IBBF- 1st place title holder
2013- Miss Asia(Vietnam)- WBPF -5th place
2015- Miss World- WBPF(bangkok)- 5th place
2016- Miss India-IBBF-3rd place(bronze medal)
2016- Miss Asia- WBPF(Bhutan)- 5th place
2016- Miss World- WBPF(Pattaya,thailand)-2nd place(Silver medal)

Indian Female athletes marching to glory

Just like Sonia, Indian female contestants have generously increased. More and more women are taking up this profession willingly. A breath of fresh air is the fact that married women too are healthily participating in these events professionally. Shweta Rathore, Yashmeen Manak, Sonali Swami, Karuna Waghmare, Mamota Devi, Deepika Choudhary are some of the female athletes who are proving it to world that an Indian woman can achieve anything if she wills.

We hope that taking inspiration from these icons; more Indian girls will take up this profession. We have seen time and again, that India has a lot of potential.
